The UN Security Council on Wednesday said it would not approve the deployment of a peacekeeping force in Somalia unless the security situation improved.
The President of the council, Russia’s UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, said this while speaking with reporters after the 15-member body discussed recent developments in Somalia.
The council was briefed by UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe on the political situation and support for peacekeeping efforts in the country.
Pascoe presented to the council the latest report by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Somalia.
