class="alignleft size-full wp-image-408" title="photo_1237617662054-1-0" src="http://www.wargeys.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/photo_1237617662054-1-0.jpg" alt="photo_1237617662054-1-0" width="281" height="400" /></a>The new top U.S. diplomat to Africa says Somalia&#8217;s government is confident it can defend itself against Islamist militia who are battling for control of the capital.</span></p><p>U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jonnie Carson told VOA&#8217;s Somali Service Friday that Somalia&#8217;s foreign minister has told him his government is &#8220;not in imminent danger of being defeated by the insurgents.&#8221; Carson met with Somali Foreign Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Oomaar in Washington earlier on Friday.</p><p>Carson said the United States is deeply concerned about the recent fighting in Somalia&#8217;s capital, Mogadishu.</p><p>Islamist insurgents have been waging an intense battle since last week against government forces and African Union peacekeepers to take control of the city. The United Nations says at least 135 people have died in the fighting and 34,000 residents have fled the city.</p><p>Carson also repeated U.S. accusations that Eritrea is helping to support the al-Shabab insurgents and said their actions are undermining the stability of the region.</p><p>Somalia&#8217;s government controls only a few roads and key installations in Mogadishu with the help of around 4,000 African Union peacekeepers.</p><p>Source: VOA</p><div

class="sibtbg"></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Somalia&#8217;s President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has appealed to Islamist insurgents to negotiate as intermittent fighting continued for an eighth day in the capital, Mogadishu.</p><p>But his former ally and Islamist spiritual leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys has rejected his overture.</p><p>He told the BBC talks were not possible while African Union troops were in the city where they are guarding key sites.</p><p>On Friday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a statement calling for opposition groups to end their offensive, renounce violence and join reconciliation efforts.</p><p>&#8220;There is no doubt, from sources overt and covert, that in the attempted coup of last weekend there was significant involvement of foreigners, some from this continent and others from outside this continent,&#8221; the UN&#8217;s envoy to Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdalla said.</p><p>In recent days there have been suggestions that the Somali government might collapse, but Mr Carson ruled out deploying the American troops currently stationed in neighbouring Djibouti into Somalia.</p><p>There would be no case for US forces to engage on the ground, Mr Carson said.</p><p>The Somali authorities controls only one major road in the Mogadishu and little else, even this is only with the assistance of about 4,350 African Union troops.</p><div
